Mind-Body Approaches to Arthritis

Stress is normal to everyday life, but when it is extended or chronic, it can become harmful to the body, and affects it in actual physical ways by upsetting the hormonal and immune systems, which can lead to the onset of many illnesses including arthritis.

Many people hide behind an artificial smile, and try to ignore the physical limitations of their arthritis. This leaves them feeling angry when they do not express their true feelings, which can lead to resentment. The psychological effects of holding in anger freeze up joint mobility, and add fuel to this destructive disease.

There are many management approaches to body care, body health and arthritis pain. Consequently many people choose alternative medicine, arthritis diet and the likes of homeopathy to compliment their regular body treatment.

But, if you endure arthritis, this can mean more inflammation and pain. However there are several natural therapies that can help you reprogram negative thought patterns into healthy ones, integrate relaxation into your life, cope with stress in a positive way and be a potential arthritis cure.

NLP or Neuro-linguistic programming can act as an arthritis natural remedy by helping you redirect the way you see yourself and your emotions, and help you to make wiser choices in both health and behaviour.

This technique uses an exchange of questions and answers regarding identity, life goals and personal beliefs, to detect unconscious thought and behaviour patterns. Affirmation tapes can then be used to help you regain control of your identity.

With this arthritis therapy you visualise your self as being happy and healthy, so that your body reacts to the positive stimulus by prompting the necessary immunological reactions for healing.

Other mind-body therapies you can use for arthritis pain include meditation, stress management techniques, hypnosis, biofeedback, cognitive therapy, guided imagery and relaxation.

Visual Imagery

Visual imagery sessions are also used to teach individuals how to relax in stressful situations. This is like a dress rehearsal, which allows you how to learn to feel relaxed when something stressful happens in your life.

You will usually be asked to imagine an emotion provoking or distressing situation, and to focus on relaxing your body, as you hold a picture of this imagined situation in your mind.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is being aware of each moment, the act of really paying attention. It teaches people to slow down, connect with themselves and be aware of their surroundings.

The idea behind this practise, which has shown to be beneficial in relieving stress, and consequently an arthritis remedy is to hold your focus, as well as your five senses on every detail of what you are experiencing. This means not only noticing the color of a flower, but also its texture and smell.

Meditation

Meditation is taking time out, in a place where you won't be disturbed, and learning to breathe in a way that facilitates attentiveness and tranquility.

The following exercise can help you achieve a sense of calm and you should practice it for fifteen minutes each day:

Make yourself comfortable either lying down or sitting with your spine straight and your shoulders dropped.

If it feels comfortable to do so, then close your eyes.

Bring your attention to your stomach, notice it rising gently as you inhale and falling as you exhale. Stay focused on your breathing.

If you mind wanders, notice these thoughts, and then slowly bring your attention back to your stomach, and your breath as it goes in and out.

Do not criticize or judge yourself when you mind wanders, just concentrate on your breath, no matter what preoccupies your mind.

Transcendental Meditation

Many people with arthritis learn to use transcendental meditation in order to control the amount and severity of flare-ups experienced, says D. Edwards Smith, MD, who is a rheumatologist and the president of the Maharishi College of Vedic Medicine in Fairfield, Iowa.

Doctors estimate that almost ninety percent of all health problems or aggravated or caused by stress, which also accelerates how fast we age.

Transcendental Meditation is a learned meditation that is carried out as you sit comfortable with your eyes closed for around twenty minutes in the morning and evening.

It is the worlds most scientifically supported program for improving health, decreasing stress, and reversing the signs of aging.

During this state the mind opens to a state of consciousness as it transcends al mental activity.
