Boron, A Trace Mineral Offers Pain Relief For Osteoarthritis

The trace mineral boron is essential to the development of cartilage and bone. However modern food processing and intensive farming methods leave our food sadly lacking in this nutrient.

Researchers have found that boron can appreciably improve
osteoarthritis.

In a year double blind, placebo controlled five-year trial researchers found the patients given the boron had a significant improvement in their symptoms.

They had less swelling, pain and increased movement compared with the control group. (J Nutr Med 1990; 1: 127-32).

If you are considering a boron supplement, then the recommended dosage is on 3mg tablet daily taken with food.

Caution:

The recommended dosage should not be exceeded, as it can be toxic in high doses.

Treatment of Arthritis in Cats and Dog Arthritis

Older pets and the larger breeds of dog can suffer from inflammation of the joints causing stiffness, swelling and pain, which in turn can cause them to limp.

Cats are less likely to need treatment of arthritis, as this painful condition is less common in cats and the symptom less severe. However animals who have had an accident and suffered physical trauma, or who have nutritional deficiencies, can be affected.

Nutritional support is an essential part of any treatment of arthritis. This involves a healthy diet and a flaxseed oil supplement. The fatty acids in the oil help to prevent inflammation and lubricate joints.

Make sure you pet has a comfortable, supportive warm bed. You can use a memory foam pillow in the base with a warm fleece cover and a blanket. The bed should be kept in a dry, warm room away from drafts.

A supplement of Glucosamine sulphate, a substance naturally found in the joints, can ease pain and inflammation and help to repair joints.

Detoxing with powdered freeze-dried barley grass is a rich source of chlorophyll and an excellent treatment of arthritis. It provides a gentle cleansing program to help prevent cell damage.

Naturopathy, A Cure For Arthritis

Naturopathy is more of a way of life than a therapy and is an effective cure for arthritis. Naturopaths consider rheumatism and arthritis the result of destructive emotions, genetic inheritance, poor diet, injury, and poor elimination, lack of exercise, environmental pollution and suppressive drugs.

A cure for arthritis can be promoted via a range of naturopathic treatments without suppressing the symptoms, as these are viewed as signs that your body is trying to heal itself.

Naturopathic treatments include:

Eating organic food.
Special naturopathic diet.
Fasting.
Elimination diets.
Raw foods.

A saline fast (Guelpa fast) is often recommended for arthritis and rheumatism, as it detoxifies, rests the digestive system and stimulates the metabolism. However this can be a difficult regime if you have to take medications regularly with your food. Additionally rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms may return after the fast.

Other naturopathic treatments include:

Hydrotherapy with either hot or cold water to eliminate toxins and pain.
Sitz baths.
Epsom salts baths.
Other hot and cold applications including steam and saunas.
Herbal treatments.
Homeopathy.
Psychotherapy.
Herbal treatments.
Yoga type exercises.

All which have been shown to promote a cure for arthritis.

Naturopathy - The Naturopathic Diet and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Can a naturopathic diet help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers?

According to research the answer is yes. In 1991 a RA trial involving fifty-three people following a naturopathic regime found that it improved symptoms notably. The study sent twenty-seven sufferers to a health farm, where they fasted for a week. This was followed by a special diet based on naturopathic principles for a year.

The other twenty-six in the control group were given a normal diet throughout the course of the experiment.

The rheumatoid arthritis group on the naturopathy diet showed results after only four weeks. They felt less pain, had fewer tender swollen joints and their ability to grasp and hold objects improved.

Importantly blood tests backed this up and showed a reduction in inflammatory activity.

A Healthy Gout Diet

There's nothing worse, you settle down for sleep, when all of a sudden your big toe becomes hot and swollen until the pain becomes unbearable. Sometimes it affects your knee or wrist and you can hobble around for over a week. Overtime this can cause permanent damage to your joints, kidneys and even disabling.

It doesn't have to be like this, as a gout diet can help prevent attacks of gout and avoid having to be prescribed medications, which only cause further problems in the long run.
The best way to keep gout attacks at bay is to:

Limit the amount of food containing purines (see below).
Eat a healthy diet and exercise so that you do not become overweight.
Drink plenty of water to assist uric acid elimination through the urine.
Eat low fat dairy products, as this reduces the risk of sudden acute gout attacks.
Avoid alcohol, especially beer because it produces lactate when metabolised, which contributes to uric acid retention.

Other foods to avoid in a gout diet include:

Organ meat such as kidneys, liver, heart and brains.
Dried peas and beans.Herrings, sardines and mussels.
Meat proteins.
Wheat bran, wheat germ and oatmeal.
Refined cereals and bread.
Yeast.

Foods that help prevent gout attacks include:

Low-fat diary products.
Eggs.
Water. Berries such as cherries strawberries and blueberries etc.
Vegetables such as kale, cabbage and other leafy green vegetables and potatoes.
Foods rich in vitamin C.
Fibre-rich complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Fatty acids found in nuts, flax seeds and salmon and nuts.
