Arthritis: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing Spondylitis is a type of arthritis, an inflammatory disease that overtime can fuse and bend the spinal vertebrae and lead to the spine stiffening and a stooped over posture. Early diagnosis and treatment helps control arthritis pain and stiffness, and can lessen or prevent significant deformity.
The exact cause of this type of arthritis is not fully understood, but it is thought to be an autoimmune disease like Rheumatoid arthritis, Thyroiditis, Diabetes and Alopecia Areata, and genetic factors are likely. Most individuals with Ankylosing Spondylitis have the gene Human Leukocyte Antigen B27, and there are also theories that a bacterial infection may be the triggering factor.
Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis include constant stiffness and pain in the buttock, hips or lower back that continues for over three months. It often starts in the sacroiliac joints. This is where the sacrum, which is the low part of the spine, joins with the ilium, the pelvic bone in the lower back.
Spondylitis can also affect the tendons and ligaments attached to the bones, for example tendonitis can cause stiffness and pain in the back of the ankle, Achilles tendon.
Bony fusion is cause by an overgrowth of the bones. This can affect the your ability to perform normal activities, if the hips, back or neck are affected, and fusion of the spine, breastbone or ribs can limit how deeply you can breathe.
Some Ankylosing Spondylitis treatments that reduce discomfort , stiffness and arthritis pain, prevent deformity, maintain good posture and conserve the ability to carry out your day to day activities include exercise, occupational and physical therapy.
Swimming is an excellent form of exercise and deep breathing exercises will help you to keep the rib cage flexible. Any exercise that strengthens the muscles around the joint will minimize the risk of becoming disabled.
Joint replacement Surgery is a treatment option if you have advanced hip or knee joint disease.
